A lot of breeds fore-fathered this one from such pedigrees as Pit Bull terrier, Staffordshire terrier, Bull Mastiff and so forth. These dogs are characterized by a hardiness and willingness to work and are aggressive dogs. They are intended for guarding or fighting.

There was a lot of crossbreeding among these dogs with other breeds and that was done mainly in order to improve the breed.
